Tom Smith invented Crackers in 1847, originally as a sugar coated almond (bon bon) wrapped in a twist of tissue paper and including a love motto'. In 1850 the almonds were replaced with toys, trinkets and jewellery and by 1860, the cracker became more or less what it is today, complete with the œcrack ? that starts many a Christmas dinner! One big change over the years is the style of packaging and before today's, more minimalist style of presentation, the boxes were printed with brightly coloured illustrations and some examples of these have been used by our designer Beryl Peters to create this beautiful jigsaw puzzle.
